The WEkEO Light Viewer: Earth Observation Within Everyone’s Reach

January 14, 2025

2025 opens with a new feature dedicated to WEkEO users. The world of Earth Observation is brimming with data and possibilities, and the WEkEO Light Viewer is here to make exploring Copernicus EO data easier than ever. Designed for simplicity and accessibility, this streamlined tool allows users to quickly visualise and understand key datasets without complex search procedures.

What is the WEkEO Light Viewer?

The WEkEO Light Viewer is a new tool designed to simplify access to EO data through an intuitive interface with a fresh look and feel. It offers an ideal starting point for beginner users of WEkEO and its services. The viewer features key preselected variables that can be displayed visually on the map in a few simple steps. The variables are divided into four categories (Marine, Land, Atmosphere, Climate Change and Sentinel layers) that can be selected at the top left of the interface. From tree cover and Ocean biomass to particulate matter and wind speed, users can visualise a wealth of data on the state of our Planet.

By clicking on the door icon next to the selected variables, users will be redirected to the full WEkEO Viewer, where they can explore the associated datasets.

Customised settings: from layers’ appearance to time and depth

The WEkEO Light Viewer has flexibility and personalisation at its heart. By clicking on the “Settings” button, user can adapt visualised layers according to their preferences. For instance, they can choose to remove coastline and reference features of the world map, change length and area units of measurement and visualise data in different colour combinations and degrees of opacity.

Additional elements that support user customisation include map projection, time, and depth. Users can indeed select between three map projection options (Equatorial, Polar North, and Polar South) and explore datasets across their full temporal range.
